About CapStar

History

Nashville is recognized around the world as a hub for healthcare and entertainment. However, few people realize our city also has deep roots in banking, which date back to 1883 when the predecessor to First American National Bank opened its first office.  Like many other banks that got their start in Nashville, First American took time to get to know its customers and invest in the community, helping to make our city what it is today. Now 125 years later, CapStar Bank is proud to continue this tradition of community involvement, integrity and vision.  Even the name CapStar Bank says Nashville with the “Cap” coming from the capital city and “Star” from the Tennessee State Flag which uses three stars to designate the three grand divisions of the state.

On July 6, 2007, a group of organizers consisting of Earl Bentz, Denny Bottorff, Greg Daily, Julie Frist, Jay Turner and Toby Wilt, and a seasoned management team lead by Claire Tucker, filed a Notice of Intent to File a Charter with the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions (TDFI). The month of July is significant to the formation of banks in Nashville:

On July 6, 1883, the predecessor to First American National Bank, American National Bank was granted its charter to open its first office in Nashville, Tennessee.

On July 1, 1916 the German American Bank, which subsequently became the Commerce Union Bank, accepted its first deposit.

On July 18, 1927 the Third National Bank was chartered in Nashville.

On July 14, 2008 CapStar Bank received its charter and opened for business with its first location at 201 4th Avenue North.

CapStar Bank is grounded on the pillars of success which propelled its predecessors headquartered in Nashville for so many years.  These pillars are Tradition, Integrity, Vision and Community. These predecessor banks provided the banking foundation that was instrumental to the economic progress Nashville made in the 20th century. Now it’s CapStar Bank’s time to carry the torch and bring approachable financial expertise to inspire significant client achievement once again to Nashville.
