Chairman of the Board
Denny Bottorff, an organizer of the bank and chairman of CapStar’s board of directors, graduated from Vanderbilt University (electrical engineering) in 1966 and received his MBA from Northwestern University in 1968.
He began his career at Commerce Union Bank in Nashville, serving in several positions before becoming president of the bank and, later, CEO. After that, he served as president of Sovran Bank in Norwalk, VA and continued in that role when Sovran merged with C&S Bank in Atlanta. In 1991, he returned to Nashville to be president and CEO of First American National Bank and then served as chairman of AmSouth Bancorporation after the First American-AmSouth merger; he retired from that role in 2001.
Denny has served in many industry leadership positions including directorships with the Tennessee and American Banking Associations and the Financial Services Roundtable. He serves on the board of Ingram Industries, Vanderbilt University and Tennessee Valley Authority and has served on several corporate boards including Dollar General and Shoney’s. He is active in local affairs, serving on several community and nonprofit boards. Denny lives in Nashville with his wife Jean and together they have two children and four grandchildren.
